Herd immunity scientifically and ethically problematic: WHO chief

Speaking at the briefing on Covid-19, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed the issue of herd immunity, saying that it has ‘never been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak, let alone a pandemic.’ He added that the approach was scientifically and ethically problematic, and letting the virus circulate unchecked would allow unnecessary infections, suffering and death. ‘Allowing a dangerous virus that we don’t fully understand to run free is simply unethical,’ he added. Ghebreyesus further said that digital technologies are helping tried-and-tested public tools more effective and apps like Aarogya Setu have helped public health departments to identify Covid clusters and expand testing in a targeted way.
