Ithaca startup Layer Origin Natural Supplements is helping New York State residents by giving away supplements to help protect their immune systems and reduce COVID-19 stress.
The business was started by two Cornell food scientists who wanted to create natural ways to increase health.
Co-founder Beau Berman says the startup started selling their supplements in February when the pandemic hit. Now, they’re helping people through it.
“During this very unique and challenging time with COVID-19, people are dealing with a lot of stress,” said Berman.
Layer Origin is giving away a free bottle of their Targeted Immune Supplement and a free workout and healthy eating guide to 100 New Yorkers to help with stress.
The supplement enhances the immune system with a natural serine protease inhibitor or SERPIN. SERPINs protect plants like beans, barley, and potatoes from diseases. Berman says the SERPINs can potentially combat attacks from viruses in humans.
Berman says Layer Origin is one of the first companies in the world to launch a product based on this concept.
“Our scientists found a way to extract it from common beans actually, and get the SERPINS from beans and in a form humans can benefit from,” said Berman.
From there, scientists put it into a capsule.
Berman says he hopes the supplements will give people a break from pandemic stress.
