We will be discussing an experimental therapy for COVID-19 that President Trump was treated with upon arrival at Walter Reed Hospital yesterday where he was admitted for COVID-19. Regeneron created two monoclonal antibodies, one from humans and one from mice, that specifically target the receptor binding domain of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. What does this mean? We will be discussing this experimental treatment, what it is, and how it works. Regeneron studied this therapy on 275 patients. They did not make the data public, but did publish several of the results. What they found was that in patients who are seronegative for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 but who are PCR positive for infection (implying that they are early on in the disease course), receiving these antibodies may decrease their viral loads by day 7 and possibly shorten their duration of symptoms. This result was not maintained for those who were seropositive and already had mounted an antibody response. What does this mean? We will discuss how to interpret these results and if this therapy is going to change the face of COVID-19 treatment.
