There is substantial evidence that links smoking with reduced immune function. A smoker has lower ability to fight infections and smoking reduces or suppresses immunity. So a person who smokes will be more prone to developing bacterial and viral lung infections and coming to COVID-19, it is primarily a disease that affects the lungs. So a smoker is at a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19. We are all aware of all the complications of COVID-19 in a harmful way. Those who have asthma, COPD, are at a high risk of triggered complications of COVID-19. I would place a smoker in a smaller category because a smoker with years of accumulation of tar in the lung has reduced lung capacity. So a smoker when they get affected by COVID-19 the complications are bound to be much higher than in non smoker and the recovery is also going to be an uphill challenge for them.
