America’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, sparred on Wednesday with Sen. Rand Paul during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) over New York’s COVID-19 death rate.
Fauci accused Paul of “misconstruing” his comments after the senator said Fauci was “a big fan” of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the shut down in that state, despite it having “the highest death rate in the world.”
Paul suggested that New York had decreased its positivity rate by achieving herd immunity rather than following health guidelines, as Fauci had said.
“I challenge that,” Fauci said, accusing the senator of “not listening to what the CDC director has said.” He said New York had not achieved herd immunity.
