hi friends
WELCOME TO IGNIS FITNESS,

The healthy eaters of the world are constantly shifting from ‘whites’ to ‘browns’ in the world of food. Consumers are consciously choosing brown rice over white rice, brown sugar over its white counterpart and even brown eggs over white ones.
This shift in eating choices is more prominent when it comes to bread as there is a conscious effort to choose brown bread over the traditional white bread.
If you have been wondering which is actually the healthier alternative between the two, consider the following factors.
Nutritional Value
White bread is practically stripped off of all the nutritional qualities including the fibre. In preparation of the white bread, wheat flour is bleached to make it white using chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, chlorine dioxide and potassium bromate. To top it, refined starch is added to this flour.
Although all these chemicals are used in smaller quantities, they can still be counted as health hazards. To top it, white bread often contains added sugars, including high fructose corn syrup.
Is brown bread all that healthy?
Hold your horses before jumping on to the brown bread wagon.
While brown bread is said to contain much more fibre than the traditional white bread, thanks to the marketing gimmicks and extremely lazy manufacturing, much of the ‘brown’ bread that you see in the market is your white bread with brown colouring.
In fact, don’t let sprinkling of some seeds on the bread fool you into thinking that you are consuming healthy, multigrain bread as most of the manufacturers provide you with the same, extremely processed bread with some variations done to make it look healthy.
Hint: Look for the word ‘caramel’ in the list of ingredients as it often indicates bread colouring to darken white bread to brow

What should you do?
Always opt for brown bread that has ‘whole wheat’ mentioned in the ingredients list as it is higher in fibre. This is because it contains the germ and bran of the wheat grain.
In fact, the bran present in the wheat flour provides fibre and the germ provides protein and Vitamin E. It also contains a phytonutrient called plant lignans, which has been found to protect against breast cancer and heart disease.
Additionally, the bread containing whole wheat has protein, vitamin B, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

The bottom line
Read the ingredients thoroughly before buying it and always be on a lookout for bread that has the least number of ingredients. Ensure that ‘whole wheat flour’ is mentioned in the ingredients list as many manufacturers cleverly add ‘multigrain’, ‘enriched wheat flour’ on the packaging, which is a fancy way of saying whole wheat grain was not left intact.
