The name ‘VITAMINE’ was proposed in 1911 by Polish chemist Casimir Funk for the nutrient compound required to prevent the nutritional deficiency disease beriberi, because of its vital (vita = life) need and because chemically it was found to be an amine

Vitamins are organic nutrients that are required in small quantities (in micrograms to milligram quantities per day) for a variety of biochemical functions and which generally cannot be synthesized by the body and must, therefore, be supplied by the diet.

The degradation of vitamins does not provide energy, but they take part in metabolic reactions that release energy from micronutrients.
