I share with you the 8 criteria I look for in understanding assessing new experimental COVID-19 drugs that help me understand if it has potential or not in treating not just Coronavirus but any disease it is being developed for. This is not meant to be a lesson in pharmacology but just a guide to help you assess information.

There are so many other new experimental therapeutic COVID-19 drugs and COVID-19 vaccines in the pipeline from many different companies and it can also be very confusing and overwhelming to understand what is really going on.

The first thing I look at is the mechanism of action which is a pharmacological term to describe how the drug works on a molecular level.

The second criteria are pharmacovigilance which is commonly known as drug safety.

The third criterion is “does the drug work” and there are two pharmacology concepts that I use as a guide: efficacy and effectiveness.

The fourth criterion is route of administration and this is how is the drug delivered into the body.

The fifth criterion is wherein the developmental phase is the drug.

The sixth criteria are inclusion and exclusion criteria which are a set of predefined definitions that are used to identify patients who will or will not be included in the study.

The 7th and 8th criteria are price and scalability.
