NUTRITION

Supporting government to prevent, control and eliminate all forms of malnutrition in Myanmar

UNICEF has been working with the Government of Myanmar since 1950. UNICEF collaborates with the Ministry of Health and Sports (MOHS) and other related ministries to address the problems of malnutrition such as acute and chronic malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorders, vitamin A deficiency, iron deficiency anemia, and vitamin B1 deficiency (infantile beriberi) for survival, growth, and development of children and women. National Nutrition Centre (NNC) of MoHS and UNICEF initiated the nutrition promotion week since 2003 and updated it into nutrition promotion month in 2009. NNC and UNICEF celebrate August of every year as the nutrition promotion month campaign for community sensitization and increased coverage of essential nutrition services such as vitamin A supplementation and deworming, cooking demonstration, exclusive breastfed mother competition, iodized salt testing, and education in the school and public, essay writing in the school, dissemination of key messages by printed and social media. UNICEF, as well as the SUN UN Network lead, looks forward to continuing working with the Government of Myanmar and partners to scale up evidence-based nutrition interventions equitably, through advocacy, technical and financial support to prevent, control, and eliminate all forms of malnutrition in Myanmar.
