WHAT IS NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS INDEX?

FOOD VALUE #3: NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS INDEX- Food Value is a concept that can help you choose healthy foods over less healthy foods and control your weight. The Nutrient-Rich Foods Index developed by Dr.Adam Drewnowski ranks foods by calculating a single number that accounts for the presence of 9 nutrients that are encouraged (protein, fiber, vitamin A. vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium), and three that are discouraged (saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium). The index is called NRF 9.3 and on the slide you can see how foods align with this index. The healthy high NRF foods are fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy and fruit juices while high fat/high sugar foods in the lower right hand corner are less healthy. While phytonutrients are not included in the index at this time, they are found in most of the high nutrient density foods along with the essential nutrients.
