Coronavirus: WHO discusses COVID-19 mental health impacts as cases near 24 million worldwide | FULL

The World Health Organization (WHO) emergencies program technical lead, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove participated in a virtual session on COVID-19 effects on mental health with Dévora Kestel, the director of Mental Health and Substance Use at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva.

Van Kerkhove talked about the Long COVID SOS group, with whom she met last month. It includes people with long-term COVID-19 effects who asked for recognition, rehabilitation, and research.

Kestel stressed on the importance of keeping strong human relations and finding a routine during times of physical distancing.

Nearly 24 million cases of COVID-19 around the world have been reported to the WHO, with many countries facing second waves of infection.

In Canada, a survey released in June by the Conference Board of Canada and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) revealed that COVID-19 is continuing to cause anxiety among Canadians when it comes to employment status, income level and the availability of coping strategies.

Eighty-four per cent of those surveyed reported that their mental health concerns had worsened since the onset of the pandemic.

Among the biggest concerns were well-being and family wellness, isolation and loneliness and anxiety and fear.
