Should athletes mega dose with vitamin C supplements?

I was at a drug store the other day to buy vitamin C supplements and I was informed however by the store clerk that there is a limit to the number of pieces a person can buy. I assume the cause of these scarcity is that people are advised to increase their intake. Some recommend to load up at least 1000mg a day for the general population. While some others would tell athletes to consume up to 2000-3000mg of vitamin C a day. But is this accurate? Would this even be beneficial to the athlete?
