Obesity and COVID-19: What’s gut bacteria got to do with it?

Did you know that your gut bacteria determines the health of your immune system and is associated with weight gain? In this video I will be talking about the relationship between obesity, COVID-19 and gut health. Disclaimer… this video is not about body shaming. Unfortunately, individuals with a Body Mass Index of 30 and higher are at an increased risk of developing severe COVID-19 disease. The goal of this video is to discuss how eating a healthy plant-based diet can help you maintain a healthy weight for your height and size which is critical to maintain the good bacteria in your colon which promote a healthy immune system. You might be thinking…. “What does the bacteria in my gut have to do with my immune system?” Well…a healthy gut is comprised of 85% good bacteria (ie. Bifidobacterium) and 15% bad bacteria (ie. Bacteroides). A Western diet (ie. rich in refined carbohydrates, fats and animal protein) decreases the percentage of the good bacteria which is linked with chronic inflammation, obesity and decreased immunity.

Topics to be discussed in this video:
1. The composition of your gut bacteria
2. Why are individuals with obesity at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease?
3. What factors from birth to adulthood influence our gut bacteria?
4. Influence of antibiotics on gut health.
5. COVID-19 vaccine and obesity.
6. Tips for weight loss.
7. Tips for promoting a healthy gut.

Stay tuned!!!
