Covid-19: Delhi close to herd immunity? Scientific community divided

Whether Delhi headed towards herd immunity or not has left the scientific community divided. While some of them feel we are nearly there, as 29% of the city’s population is exposed to the virus that causes the disease already, others say more than 70% of the population has to be exposed before herd immunity can be achieved against the viral infection. Herd immunity refers to a stage in the epidemic when the virus cannot spread widely because there are not enough vulnerable people. The first serological survey, which was conducted between June 27 and July 10 in Delhi, showed 22.8% of people had COVID antibodies. The latest study, based on tests carried out in the first week of August, shows around six percentage points more people have been exposed to the virus.
