Preconception and Prenatal Vitamins

Q: How much folate should I take in preparation for pregnancy?
Q: What are some important nutrients in a prenatal vitamin?

In many cases, food is favored over supplements as your best source of vitamins and minerals. However, preconception vitamins, (particularly folate) in addition to a healthy diet, can help set the stage for a healthy pregnancy. And, prenatal vitamins are recommended because your needs for these nutrients increase during pregnancy. Some nutrients are difficult to obtain or sustain in the diet during pregnancy because of appetite changes, nausea, and because your body’s needs increase to grow a baby. Supplements can help ensure nutrient levels remain consistent and stable.
