How well has attempts by alternative remedies worked in dealing with the corona virus? Does it really work? What is the evidence for its efficacy?
Traditionally India is a country that has two indigenous healthcare systems – Siddha & Ayurveda and a third adopted more recent Unani with roots in Perso-Arabic traditional medicine as practiced in Mughal India and in Muslim culture. All three systems primarily use plant-based ingredients to formulate their concoctions. In addition to plants they also use metals, minerals and ingredients of animal origin like fat, meat, bone, urine and excreta. All three systems presuppose the presence, in the body, of different “humours”. And they believe all illnesses are a result of an imbalance in these humours. In both Ayurveda and Siddha there are three humours (doshas) – Vāta (Gas) – The Air Humour, Pitta (Bile) – The Fire Humour and Kapha (Phlegm) – The Water Humour. Unani on the other hand has four humours blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile – a concept that originates from the Greek humour theory of Hippocrates.
