At the Afghan-Japan Communicable Diseases Hospital in the Afghan capital Kabul, relatives of Covid-19 patients have no choice but to step in and directly care for their loved ones. Amid a shortage of staff and medical resources, families fear that others will steal the medical supplies meant for their sick relatives. The government has been struggling to cope with the Covid-19 situation in Afghanistan, where a total of 35,615 coronavirus infections and 1,186 related deaths had been confirmed as of July 21, 2020. Health experts estimate that about 80 per cent of suspected coronavirus cases are awaiting tests, hiding the true extent of the nation’s outbreak.
